Mutu Batak” comes from the growing region of Lintong in Northern Sumatra near the shores of Lake Toba. Lintong coffees are from Sumatra, the island that is politically and geographically part of Indonesia. Lintong Nihuta is the town that has become synonymous with the entire southern part of Lake Toba area. Lake Toba defines the landscape of the area, as the largest volcanic crater lake in the world, and the result of the largest volcanic event on earth in the last 25 million years!
Tasting Notes: Earth-toned sweetness, rustic date and palm sugars, pungent bittersweetness, raw cacao, sharp tobacco, peat/scotch aromatic accent, inky thick body, licorice hint. Medium to French. Good for espresso. Mutu Batak is a potent-smelling coffee, earthy and with a rustic-tinged sweetness from front to back. The dry grounds give off sweet caramel notes, a pipe tobacco accent, and a savory umami hint. The wet aroma is marked by smells I tend to associate with Lintong coffee, rustic palm sugar and some green mossy hints, along with an intense bittersweetness that pulls all the outlier aspects closer to the ground.
